What Are Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are basically an accelerated form of exfoliation induced by the use of chemical products.
There are different types of chemical peels which aim to remove pigmentation, reduce lines and wrinkles and treat acne and scarring. During your consultation we will advise you on what types of peel are most suitable to address your condition and how many peels you would require.
How Do Chemical Peels Work?
Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin and can be used to treat a particular area (such as lines around the eyes or mouth), or all over the face, arms, hands and neck. First your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, and then the chemical solution will be carefully applied.
People often report a mild stinging when applying the product. Superficial peels result in mild facial redness and occasional swelling but this usually resolves within 48 hours. The new regenerated skin is more uniform in colour, smoother and less wrinkled giving a more youthful look overall and with a reduction in the appearance of any pitted scars. The habitual use of sunscreen will prevent further sun damage and maintain the improved skin quality.
What Types Of Peels Are Used?
The peels used include TCA lactic acid / saicyclic acid and glycolic acid. The peel used will depend on the problem needing treatment. These peels may be used to treat fine wrinkling, sun damage, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. Treatment takes only a few minutes, and your skin may look slightly pink and feel tight for a couple of hours after the treatment.
What Can Chemical Peels Treat?
Chemical peels can treat ageing skin, fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots and freckles, acne, acne scars and greasy skin, melasma and pigment problems.
How Many Chemical Peels Do I Need?
Usually a series of 4-6 very superficial and superficial peels are needed to treat ageing skin and acne, acne scars and pigment problems.
What Do I Need To Do Before A Peel?
Most of the peels require no preparation however you may be required to use a skin care programme depending on the skin problem requiring treatment. This will be discussed at your consultation.
You may be put on a home care programme in order to prepare your skin for the peel. The home care programme is very easy to follow and will consist of a selection of products to be applied for a period of at least 2 weeks before your first treatment.
Are There Any Side Effects?
During the treatment you may experience a mild stinging sensation, which will disappear quickly. Some pinkness may occur depending on the sensitivity of the skin. Some flaking of the skin after your peel is normal and should subside during the first few days post peel.
Can Chemical Peels Be Used With Other Treatments?
Chemical peels can be used with a variety of other treatments. We will offer you a 'Facial Rejuvenation Programme' which may include several different treatment options. |
